Public Service Responsibilities:
• Process permit applications.
• Review architectural plans to ensure code compliance.
• Forward requests for variation of the zoning ordinances to the
Zoning Board and City Council for approval.
• Provide advice and consultation regarding construction and repair.
• Inspect all buildings to be sold for compliance with the City of Berwyn
Building Codes.
• Issue Building Permits.
PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR:
• Electrical Work
• Plumbing Work
• Concrete and Asphalt Work
• HVAC or Boiler Work
• All Demolition (including dumpsters)
• Dormers and / or Additions Interior and Exterior
• Alterations (walls & ceilings)
• Sewer Replacement
• Decks, Steps, Handrails etc.
• Siding, Gutters, Downspouts
• Garage and Accessory Buildings
• Overhead Doors
• Swimming Pools, Hot Tubs and Jacuzzi Tubs
• Stucco or Brick Replacement
• Fences and Gates
• Replacement Windows and Storm Windows
• Storm Doors, Screens and Glass Blocks
PERMITS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR:
• Inside painting
• Cleaning
• Appliance installation or replacement
• Floor coverings.
PENALTIES
The property owner is responsible and must ensure that he and/or
his hired contractor acquires a permit, or be subject to a penalty.
Contractors must be licensed and bonded with the City of Berwyn.
Contractors/owners must supply a contract and/or estimate on work
to be done. Owners may NOT acquire a permit stating that they are
doing the work and then hire a contractor to perform the job.
Home owner must be present during all work, if permit is in their
name. The minimum penalty for work without a permit is $100.00
over the cost of the permit. The city may require the owner to remove
the improvement, particularly if the work does not comply to code.
